Can we swap to a bigger size as our child grows?

Yes, at no charge, as many times as growing requires, and it is one of the main reasons to rent a string instrument rather than buy one.

Most students move up a size every eighteen months to two years through the growing years, though a growth spurt can shorten that timeline considerably. The signal is usually the teacher saying so, or the visible signs: cramped fingers, a reaching bow arm, an instrument that suddenly looks small against the child.

If you are not sure whether it is time, bring your student by. Sizing takes a couple of minutes, everyone here is a musician who can do it properly, and if the answer is “not yet” we will happily say so. There is no advantage to rushing a child onto an instrument they have not grown into, and a too-large instrument sets technique back more than a snug one ever does.

Come by the Norwalk shop, or if you rent through one of our New York school programs, talk to us about arranging the exchange. We are at the schools we serve regularly.
